Special Education and Inclusion Seminar 2022

For 3 weeks, I’ve been meeting with special education and inclusion entrepreneurs and advocates across Accra and Tema, on a quest to explore the frontier for disability inclusion practices in Ghana’s schools, while collecting inspiring perspectives and insights to inform the impact of The Kaleidoscope Collaborative on public elementary schools in Houston, Texas.
In a meeting with the Founder and Director of MultiKids Inclusive Academy in Accra and a lecture from the National Inclusive Education Coordinator Rose Ofosuhemaa Darko, I learned that Ghana started work on an inclusive schools policy in 2011 and voted it into law in 2016. I was encouraged to learn that the Universal Design for Learning framework is written into the policy as well!
While there clearly is need, motivation, and political advocacy, broad scale implementation requires education, training, and expertise.
I’m excited to learn and dialogue with 20+ education leaders in Ghana for the next 4 weekends to continue etching out the landscape for disability inclusion within public education and form intercontinental partnerships that strengthen accessibility for learners across the disability spectrum.
